Bachelor Degree In Special Education
Bachelor of Science in Special Education The Bachelor of Science in Special Education degree program prepares teachers to work with children with disabilities. The program is offered on-campus and online. On-campus program has two degree option licenses: the SPED general curriculum (GC) license and the SPED adapted curriculum (AC) license. The GC license prepares teachers to work with children with disabilities who are pursuing a high school diploma and are in the general education curriculum. The AC license prepares teachers to work with children with significant cognitive disabilities who are not pursuing a regular high school diploma and whose education is based in an extension of the general curriculum and an adapted curriculum. Online BS in Special Education program offers only general curriculum option for teachers working with children with disabilities who are pursuing a high school. This program is offered through Wachovia Partnership East (WPE). Moreover, special education majors receive licensure to teach reading in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The special education coursework provided through WPE is currently offered completely online through the Virtual Consortium.
Bachelor of Arts in Special Education and Counseling Students in the Educator of Individuals with Disabilities program will prepare to teach individuals with disabilities who are cognitively impaired, emotionally disturbed, specific learning disabled and physically/multiply disabled. Graduates of the program will qualify for the Teacher of the Handicapped certificate which is valid for grades K-12. Students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher for admission to the major and for continuation and graduation from the program. Teacher certification requirements include the satisfactory completion of field experiences in the sophomore and junior years as well as a full semester of student teaching is required during the senior year. Students may be interested in pursuing positions in public and private school teaching, extended employment settings, group homes, supervised apartments, programs for adults with disabilities and with private agencies serving the developmentally disabled.
