MBA - Consulting

Consultants, in the most general terms, give advice to businesses on how to improve their efficiency, profits and products. Consultants can focus in on one specific area like finance or management or they can provide general services that can help businesses overhaul their whole strategy. These consultants or their larger firms will help businesses solve problems with customer service, product design, new product releases or even cut out unnecessary aspects that are causing a loss of profits. Those looking to become consultants will find that there are opportunities for work in a wide range of industries and that every type of company, from pharmaceuticals to insurance sales will at some point have need to work with consultants.

Students hoping to pursue an MBA program specifically in consulting will find that they are somewhat rare. There are, however, a few online and on campus programs that have started to meet the needs of students who know they'd like to work in consulting. The program of study for consulting students will usually be fairly broad at first, providing essential information on marketing, management, finance, business strategy, product design and more to give students a firm foundation to work with upon graduation and in their studies. Specific courses are often offered in more specialized aspects of consulting like information technology, customer service, accessing management, and business organization. Students will have the opportunity to pursue coursework that meets their specific career goals while still getting the basic education that will allow them to work in a wide range of fields. MBA programs often take about two years to complete, but those who attend part time or take accelerated online classes may find it takes less or more time.

Graduates of MBA programs in consulting will find they are prepared to work in a very wide range of industries, many of which will suit their particular interests and allow them to achieve career goals they previously hadn't been able to. A majority of consulting work lies within larger consulting firms that can either specialize in one area of business advice or offer a one-stop place for businesses to begin reshaping their enterprise. It's difficult to pin down just what a consultant can expect to make as the field is varied and is highly dependent on location, but the national average income for consultants is around $146,000 annually. With an unstable economy and many businesses looking to reinvent themselves and cut costs, consultants are in high demand and many will find a range of job opportunities to choose from upon graduation.
