Degree & Programs In Mass Media
Associate of Science in Mass Communication The following program of study follows the Communication Field of Study Curricula for Advertising/Public Relations, Journalism, and Mass Communication/Radio-TV as adopted by the Higher Education Coordinating Board. Students who follow this curricula will be able to major in the above fields of study and transfer between 12 and 15 hours of course work in these major program options to public two - and four - year institutions in Texas.
Certificate Program in Radio Broadcasting The Broadcasting program at American Broadcasting School provides students with all the programming skills required to become a broadcaster. Students receive training in the following areas: On-Air shows, Production (writing and producing commercials with sound effects/music), News (writing and on-air delivery), Sports casting (writing and on-air presentation including play-by-play if desired), Advertising Sales, Digital Production (production using Computers), Computer-Based Broadcast Technology (computerized broadcast) and more. The 10-month program can be completed either on-campus or online.
Associates Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication The field of study curricula and core curricula are intended to facilitate transferability of courses among Texas public colleges and universities. Students will pursue a full academic and practical curriculum in the gathering, preparation and dissemination of responsible and quality news content. All students receive a core curriculum of news writing and reporting, critical thinking, law and ethics. The world of journalism is changing fast. Graduates must be prepared to function and lead in a new and changing environment.
Bachelor of Arts in Media and Film Studies The B.A. in Film and Media Studies provides students with skills that can be applied in a number of fields including entertainment industry, (film, television and new media), local media arts organizations, teaching and research. Based in a broad liberal arts education focused on the humanities, the students graduate from the program with the ability to think analytically and speak and write clearly and persuasively – skills in demand across almost all sectors of the global economy. The program develops these skills through a variety of discussion-based and writing intensive courses. Students can pursue this degree either on Tempe Campus or completely online. Graduates with degrees in Film and Media Studies have secured jobs in the entertainment industry as creative executives, producers, managers, and writers. They work in the media arts, in story and production development, in exhibition, distribution and film, television and video game production. To prepare students for these opportunities, the B.A. in Film with a concentration in film and media studies emphasizes media and society, styles and genres, and screenwriting. We share the same core requirements with the major in Film and Media Studies in the Herberger College of the Arts.
Associate of Arts in Journalism To receive a degree in Journalism, students pursue a full academic and practical curriculum in the gathering, preparation and dissemination of responsible and quality news content. Students may select a specialty in broadcast, print or Internet journalism. All students receive a core curriculum of news writing and reporting, critical thinking, law and ethics. The broadcast emphasis offers significant experiential and classroom training in television and radio broadcast. The print sequence trains journalists for newspaper and magazine journalism. The Internet emphasis trains students to identify and define journalism of the future on the World Wide Web. The students will study multimedia journalism, including broadcast, print and on-line options. They will learn professional skills that will enable them to adapt swiftly to a changing journalism environment. Content that is useful and interesting will have value regardless of the delivery system or systems of a particular era. For this reason, students also are taught the intellectual and theoretical skills they will need to help them interpret the world around them and understand the role of the media in society.
Associate of Arts in Media Studies
Associate of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication Specialized skills in writing, speaking and designing for the mass media help journalism students find employment in the print and electronic job markets around the world. Gain an Associate in Arts degree along with experience earned on College of DuPage’s award-winning publications: the weekly Courier student newspaper, the 24/7 Courier Web Edition, the semi-annual Chaparral features magazine and the annual C.O.D. Today orientation issue. The Journalism and Mass Communication program at C.O.D. includes year-round cooperative education and internship experiences at public relations outlets, the college’s public radio station, area newspapers and local government agencies.
Associate of Arts in Radio-Television-Film The Radio/TV/Film program is designed to prepare students with the necessary knowledge and skills to obtain entry-level employment in the fields of film and television, working with digital video cameras, sound recording equipment, digital video and audio editing, location lighting techniques, sound effects, and more. The program includes digital video production, digital radio/audio production, digital post-production, remote production, program performance, acting techniques, graphics, producing, directing, Internet streaming, distribution systems and management skills from both academic and technical skills perspectives.
Associate of Arts in Cinema If you are interested in cinema and would like to earn the Associate degree, then the Cinema program from College of the Canyons is for you. This program will provide you with the needed knowledge and skills that will help you to find the good job as the opportunities and professional areas in which to work are varied. Large and small film studios, television production companies, product and service companies, public and private organizations, and individuals all use cinema/television professionals. Positions include Camera Operator, Audio Technician, Film/TV Floor Positions, Lighting Technician, Photographer, Film/Tape Editor, Cinematographer and Director.
