Certificate Program in Interior Design Methods For Yacht Design And The Boatbuilding Industry

Effective boat design is determined by such important factors as crew safety and comfort. In this unique course the students will find out which consideration are required for attractive, ergonomically sound, and practical passenger and crew accommodations. Ideal for both interior designers and naval architects and marine engineers who need to gain increased understanding of accommodation design. This course offers a comprehensive review of ergonomic and aesthetic considerations in boat interior design, general arrangement, and layout, with a specific focus on design implications of the latest manufacturing materials, methods and structures. Central to the offering is a complete, newly published textbook written by the noted designer Lisa Hix. Interiors and Arrangements meets a critical need within the marine industry for detailed, updated instruction on the disciplines of interior design. The course covers such the key design issues as physical access, storage, stairway and lighting design, berth, galley, dining and head layouts. What distinguishes the accompanying text from others is that Ms. Hix never loses sight of physical imperatives—wave motion, heeling, drainage, ventilation and vessel structure—as factors in determining a boat’s interior spaces.

The exceptionally well-researched text involves the principles of design implications of new materials, composites and components, with all sources fully referenced in a complete bibliography. The result is a learning tool that designers can use immediately to create more functional and comfortable boats. As a stand-alone course of study, Interiors and Arrangements is created for marine design professionals seeking who wish to enhance their existing skills and also for new students who plan to build a career in the field of marine interior design. NOTE: Substantial portions of this course are included in Westlawn’s larger Yacht Design Lite course and also in the full Yacht Design Program. Prerequisite: The students are required to have strong manual drafting or CAD skills and knowledge of descriptive terminology used in boat construction. A computer with reliable Internet access and email is required.

Courses in Design Projects for Adobe Illustrator CS2

The course provides students with valuable experience of Illustrator’s drawing tools and image-editing features that aren't usually covered in introductory courses. Students practice drawing and tracing with the Pen tool, learn how to fine-tune the contours of any line, how to work with color, use shortcuts for applying color to images, and add special effects to the drawings. The course is designed for students of different level, offering a variety of individual tasks suitable for every particular student.

Courses in Design and Industry

The Design and Industry program is composed of a number of courses, some of which may be taken online. The courses of the program include Plastics for Design (DAI 344), Product Design I (DAI 310), Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Systems (DAI 460), Rapid Visualization (DAI 424) and Research and Development Lab (DAI 505). The last two classes are new ones.

Diploma Program in Yacht Design

Yacht Design program gives students the opportunity to study the principles of design based on the fundamentals of small craft naval architecture and marine engineering. It involves 38 lessons divided into four modules (see syllabus below). Both custom design methods and design for series production will be covered in this program. Design projects focus on production boats while engineering modules teach structural requirements. The students will study the subjects using 24 text books, study plans, and other materials which will be sent at the beginning of each module. The tuition fee includes the cost of these materials.

Westlawn instructors will provide students with the guidance which can help them become proficient in each subject. They will also critique students’ course work professionally and provide additional instruction as needed. Graduates of the Yacht Design course will become professional yacht designers and will be able to find employment at production boat building companies, independent design firms, and as self-employed yacht designers in private practice.
