Veterinary Studies

Veterinary Studies includes the study of animal health and the treatment of diseases in animals. Veterinary Studies encompasses animal physiology and anatomy, animal clinical procedures, animal surgical and surgical assisting techniques, diagnostics, anesthesiology, and veterinary ethical and professional standards. Veterinarians may work with small animals such as household pets, or large animals like livestock and show animals. Some veterinarians work with animals as a way of researching and preventing human health problems. Veterinarians often work long hours and are expected to respond to animal emergencies.

Do you love animals and care deeply about their welfare? If so, earning a degree in Veterinary Science may be right for you. These academic programs can prepare you for careers as a veterinary scientist and veterinarian. Veterinary professionals have important jobs and are in high demand throughout the country. Learn more about whether earning a degree in Veterinary Science may be right for you.

A General Studies degree, or a Generalist degree as it is sometimes called, may be a good option for students who haven't decided on a specific career path. General Studies programs provide a multi-disciplinary education that can prepare students for a wide range of careers or for graduate study.

Veterinary Assistants are not required to complete a formal education program, but instead receive on-the-job training. Typically, Veterinary Assistants work with a licensed veterinarian, doing things that need to be done around the office. Though this may be limiting in some ways, Veterinary Assistants have several career options and can work in many different arenas of animal care.

The average salary for Veterinary Assistants varies depending on experience, location, industry and employer. Veterinary Assistants make an average salary of about $10 per hour or $20,000 per year.

To earn a Veterinary Technician certificate, one must complete a 1- to 3-year program of study. A Veterinary Technician certificate consists of classroom study and an internship.
