Turf and Turfgrass Management

Turfgrass management refers to the business and science of maintaining turfgrass in, most commonly, recreational settings such as golf courses and athletic fields. Programs leading to a certificate, associate degree or bachelor's degree in turfgrass management prepare students for careers as golf course superintendents, sports field managers, landscaping operations managers, lawn care specialists, assistant golf course superintendents and more. It's also possible to obtain a master's degree in a related area, opening up career advancement opportunities in areas such as research or technical sales.

Turf and turfgrass management students learn to keep turf healthy and aesthetically appealing, control diseases and insects, and allow for proper turf drainage. Common courses include irrigation and drainage, soil science, landscape horticulture plants, plant pathology, human resources management, plant diseases, weed science, soil resources, entomology, plant nutrition and turf practices. Students are oftentimes required to complete an internship at a turfgrass management facility.
