Taxidermy Services

Taxidermy is the art of rendering once-living creatures as standing statues of their former selves. Taxidermy services are primarily sought by hunters and fishers hoping to preserve an exceptional catch. People who work in this field, called taxidermists, should have a love for the outdoors and the dexterity to work with small tools.

Taxidermy services programs typically use hands-on lessons divided into sections on different types of fish, game and mounting backgrounds. As students address the unique challenges inherent in manipulating and posing the anatomy of birds, reptiles, mammals and fish, they will also develop knowledge of new tools and techniques.

Most taxidermy programs are short certificate or diploma programs lasting 2-4 semesters. Students may need to purchase their own tools and supplies for classwork such as pins, mounts, scalpels and raw hide fleshers. Some students enroll in a taxidermy services program simply to learn a new hobby; however, those looking to become professional taxidermists can find work at outdoor supply stores and museums. Alternatively, many professional taxidermists choose to open their own business.
