Range Management

Range managers monitor grasslands, tundra, wetlands and other uncultivated lands, helping to maintain the existence of vast ecosystems. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs in range management encompass the study of ecology and habitat management. Although the curriculum will vary by degree level, most programs include an analysis of rangeland ecosystems and resource management, as well as public policy and planning.

Graduates may find themselves working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management. Graduates may also consider a number of different ecology and management fields, including conservation, water and soil treatment, land-use planning, wildlife research and more.

The Society for Range Management (SRM), a governing body of allied professionals in the field, declares that the demand is high, while the number of job-ready professionals steadily decreases (www.rangelands.org). The SRM provides accreditation for different range management degree programs and connects graduates with career opportunities at both federal and independently funded organizations.
