Plant Protection and Pest Management

Plant protection and pest management is a descriptive label for the job of understanding the science on which pest control is based. Although high school graduates may be trained as pest control workers, undergraduate and graduate students in this field will learn about weed growth and reproduction, insect biology and crop science. They will also study the impact that both pests and pest control measures have on the environment.

Bachelor's degree programs in the field may be found in plant sciences with emphasis in plant protection or in plant protection and pest management with emphasis in entomology. Post-baccalaureate degrees include the Master of Science in Integrated Pest Management and the Master of Plant Protection and Pest Management (MPPPM). Graduates may be employed as integrated pest management professionals by fertilizer and pesticide services, regulatory agencies or by one of the Cooperative Extension Services offices. Cities, farmers and ranchers regularly run into pest management problems; graduates of these programs should be skilled in solving them.
