Food Sciences

Food science is the study that ensures food is safe, nutritious and plentiful. A Certificate in Food Safety is offered by many university food science departments. Students who earn this certificate are trained in sanitation and handling of food to prevent bacterial and toxic contamination.

Food scientists typically earn a minimum of a Bachelor's of Science in Food Science. Courses emphasized in the 4-year program are food safety, chemistry, business, nutrition, microbiology and engineering. Training as a food scientist allows graduates to analyze and solve problems in food processing. Internships allow students to gain further personal experience in the field. Career opportunities exist in areas of product development, food inspection, food processing and quality control.

Graduate programs prepare students to become technical food science experts and research team leaders. Those with master's and Ph.D. degrees are usually employed by industries, institutions and government agencies.

Sous Chefs, also known as sub chefs, are second in command in the kitchen. These professional cooks are responsible for planning and directing food preparation. Sous Chefs are also responsible for assisting executive chefs and chefs de cuisine. Learn more about working as a Sous Chef here.

Holistic nutrition is an individualized nutrition plan that relies on a combination of food and nutrients to promote overall health. People who study holistic nutrition often obtain work as holistic nutritionists.

Restaurant managers or individuals, working in retail food stores or other businesses relating to food, may need to earn a Food Safety Certification. Requirements for obtaining a Food Safety Certification vary by state and may range from taking an approved training program to a state exam.

Food Scientists generally work in government, universities or the industry of food processing. They develop new food products, design processes for packaging, conduct shelf-life studies and perform chemical testing. A Food Scientist typically needs a bachelor's degree in a related discipline, but many research and applied science positions require a graduate degree.

Food scientists, also called food technologists, seek to improve the flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, safety and cost of food through the combined study of science and engineering. To become a food scientist, one first must earn a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science or Food Science.

A hospitality management bachelor's degree with an emphasis on food and beverage can lead to a career as a food service manager, lodging manager, meeting and convention planner, or other career. Courses can include Introduction to Business, Culinary Theory, Restaurant Operations, Food and Beverage Service, Menu Planning, Nutrition and Sanitation, and Hospitality Accounting, and more.
