Floriculture Operations and Management

Floriculture operations are a $10 billion segment of the U.S. economy. This industry develops, grows and utilizes cut flowers, potted flowers, and bedding and foliage plants for the consumer. Colleges and universities offer programs that prepare students to mange and operate commercial florist enterprises, greenhouses, flower farms, and supply and delivery services. In this career, one must learn floral design, floral arranging, plant science, purchasing, delivery and storage, and business management of floral operations. Courses may include horticulture business management, plant biology, plant materials, essentials of accounting, greenhouse crop production, plant entomology and interior plantscaping. There are several avenues open to the prospective student. Many colleges offer a two-year associate's degree in floriculture. This will enable a student to work in flower shops, farms, and greenhouses. A bachelor's, master's and doctorate are available from select universities. These advanced degrees usually prepare someone for high-level administration duties in large commercial operations.
