Students gain a solid foundation in historic and contemporary methods of horse training, nutrition, breeding and health diagnostics. These programs also prepare young professionals for specialized industry classes such as stable and racetrack management.

An essential part of any equestrian studies program is advanced knowledge of the riding, handling and training of horses, and most programs require students to have some experience in horse handling prior to enrollment. Some institutions allow students to bring their own horse, while others include horse lease and maintenance in tuition costs. Typical coursework includes basic equitation, equine breeding management, horse training techniques, and principles of equestrian management. Bachelor's programs in equestrian studies offer students the chance to double major in pre- veteneraian science or management. Though Engineering Studies is an uncommon degree program in the United States, graduates from an Engineering Studies program develop the problem-solving skills associated with engineering as well as a liberal arts perspective.
