Equestrian studies programs prepare future veterinarians, horse trainers and horse show mangers for careers in the equine industry. Students gain a solid foundation in historic and contemporary methods of horse training, nutrition, breeding and health diagnostics. These programs also prepare young professionals for specialized industry classes such as stable and racetrack management.
An essential part of any equestrian studies program is advanced knowledge of the riding, handling and training of horses, and most programs require students to have some experience in horse handling prior to enrollment. Some institutions allow students to bring their own horse, while others include horse lease and maintenance in tuition costs. Typical coursework includes basic equitation, equine breeding management, horse training techniques, and principles of equestrian management. Bachelor's programs in equestrian studies offer students the chance to double major in pre- veteneraian science or management. Students may also prefer to earn an assciate's degree or professinal certificate. Graduates go on to careers as trainers, horse-show managers and veterinarians.
A General Studies degree, or a Generalist degree as it is sometimes called, may be a good option for students who haven't decided on a specific career path. General Studies programs provide a multi-disciplinary education that can prepare students for a wide range of careers or for graduate study.
International Studies degree programs are designed to train students for a wide range of careers in business, education, law, politics and other fields. Students can choose to earn a general International Studies degree or focus on a specific area, such as Asia or Europe.
A bachelor's degree program in Engineering Studies blends engineering with social sciences and the humanities. Though Engineering Studies is an uncommon degree program in the United States, graduates from an Engineering Studies program develop the problem-solving skills associated with engineering as well as a liberal arts perspective.
