Economics of Agriculture
Once synonymous with agronomics, present-day agricultural economics is focused less on agronomic sciences like crop production or soil chemistry and more on the management of farms as a business. With concentrations in finance, food industry marketing, quantitative economics, sales and marketing, an undergraduate program in the economics of agriculture has a lot in common with a traditional business degree.
Associate degree programs offer students a broad agricultural knowledge to prepare them for jobs like general farm operator, extension worker or agricultural writer. Bachelor's program graduates could apply the basic economic principles learned to practically any business, although their exposure to a wealth of agricultural management issues could qualify them for careers in farm or ranch management, livestock production, commodity marketing and resource management.
Advanced degree candidates may choose to branch out into specialties like agricultural finance, natural resources management, regional economics and international trade. Careers in federal and state government include economic development and policy analysis.
