Animal Breeding

Animal breeding involves the selection and breeding of animals utilizing genetics and related sciences to create offspring with specific desirable traits. Because this field concerns complex and highly scientific topics, those who choose to go into it typically need a graduate degree in animal breeding or related field, such as veterinary science or genetics.

Many colleges and universities offer animal breeding and genetics graduate degree programs, usually in an agriculture or life sciences department. Students can expect class and laboratory instruction in topics like comparative animal nutrition, toxicology, genetics of livestock improvement and animal husbandry. Programs also teach prospective animal breeders to keep detailed records on the health of animals and inherited traits of their offspring.

Employment opportunities for animal breeders are commonly found either in research or on a farm, ranch or other agricultural environment. Some graduates become consultants for farmers and others breed, raise and sell their own animals.

Animal Doctors, also known as veterinarians, care for animals from cats to elephants. Most veterinarians specialize in large or small animals. Animal Doctors are required to earn Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees and obtain licensure.

Are you interested in learning more about animals and understanding what makes animals work? Earning a master's degree in animal science will prepare you for many career opportunities. Although animal science graduate programs are seldom offered fully online, you may be able to complete some of the required courses online.
